Petroleum Safety Authority Norway has given consent to Statoil Petroleum AS for the use of Statfjord B beyond its design lifetime.

Statfjord is an oil field located on both sides of the demarcation line between the Norwegian and UK continental shelves in the Tampen area. The field has been developed with the Statfjord A, B and C production platforms, which all have concrete gravity base structures incorporating storage cells. Statfjord B is located in the southern part of the field started production 3 years after Statfjord A, in 1982. The Statfjord B platform supplies Kårstø with oil and gas.

Based on the assessments made in connection with the application and a desire to utilise Statfjord B for as long as prudent as regards safety, technical and financial aspects, Statoil has applied for a 20-year lifetime extension from 31 August 2011.

Statfjord is one of the oldest producing fields on the Norwegian continental shelf, and the largest oil discovery in the North Sea.
