The wind farm proposal introduced by Gov. Martin O’Malley has not been supported by the Senate Finance Committee since its members believe offshore wind will impose financial challenges on the consumers.
O’Malley perceives wind as one of Maryland’s most abundant sources of energy and according to his estimations ratepayers will not have any increases in their utility bills for years to come. Many senators do not believe the $2 potential increase on Maryland residents’ utility bills a month is realistic. Sen. Allan Kittleman, R-Howard, highlighted that the objective of generating 20% of energy from renewable sources by 2022 is a big factor in the desire to explore offshore wind.
However, O’Malley argues that Maryland needs to move forward and take advantage of the most precious natural resource applying the available technology.
