One of the UK’s most highly regarded oil and gas industry leaders will be given a special award for his services to offshore safety at a special awards ceremony on 18 April 2012.
The Award for Services to Safety will be presented to Mike Bowyer at the 2012 UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards, in recognition for his many years supporting Step Change in Safety – the organisation dedicated to making the UK the safest place to work in the worldwide oil and gas industry.
Mike established himself as a worthy ambassador for industry safety, spending five years as a committed member of the Step Change Leadership Team.
He led the Personal Responsibility for Safety (PRfS) workgroup, helping to producing guidance and supporting materials on the benefits of PRfS with input from around 50 organisations. He then took the role of co-chair of Step Change’s Workforce Engagement Steering Group shortly after its inception, leading the development of the soon-to-be-launched workforce engagement practical guide and survey tool.
This project, which will enable organisations to measure how well they engage with their onsite workforce and benchmark against the rest of the industry promises to transform oil and gas industry workforce engagement and play a crucial role in improving safety culture.
Mike Bowyer said: “It’s a tremendous honour and a privilege to receive this award. My belief has always been that, while the knowledge required for everyone to understand the part they have to play in keeping themselves and others safe already exists in the industry, the real benefits are in sharing it.”
Step Change in Safety co-chair, Martin Ellins , said: “I’d like to congratulate Mike Bowyer on being awarded the 2012 Award for Services to Safety, an honour only given to the very best in our industry who have made their mark and made a difference over the long-term. “Mike has certainly done that and has set the bar for other Step Change workgroup leaders.”
Fellow Step Change co-chair, Ken Robertson , added: “Mike’s considered, determined and pragmatic approach to finding effective ways to improve safety has inspired many others to work collaboratively too.
“In his role as co-chair of Step Change’s Workforce Engagement Steering Group, he has been instrumental in spearheading efforts towards delivering what will be a pioneering workforce engagement practical guide and survey tool when it is rolled out later in the year.
The UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards celebrate the outstanding people and companies helping to create safer offshore working environments – whether through innovative new processes or exceptional individual enthusiasm and personal commitment. The other winners of the UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards will be announced at the awards ceremony lunch on 18 April at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
