The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in a report that consumption of alternative transportation fuels increased 6% in 2010, with a total of 457,755 thousand gasoline-equivalent gallons, compared to 431,107 thousand gasoline-equivalent gallons in 2009.
Natural gas continues to account for just more than half of all alternative fuels consumed by alternative fueled vehicles in fleets. The consumption of ethanol (E85) jumped 21% from the prior year’s consumption, an increase from 71,213 thousand gasoline-equivalent gallons in 2009 to 90,323 thousand gasoline-equivalent gallons in 2010.
Overall production of E85 rose 20% in 2010 making it more widely available, particularly in the Midwest states of Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin, where Federal and State fleets show increased light duty vehicle acquisitions and fuel consumption.
