Sakhalin Energy, the operator of Sakhalin-2 – one of the world’s largest integrated oil and gas project – plans to continue shipping additional volumes of LNG in 2012 at the request of Japan. This is stated in the company’s 2011 sustainable development report.
The document states that after the earthquake in March 2011, over the plan of 34 batches of LNG totaling over 2 million tons were sent to Japan. Nine batches were shipped through supernormal production, and 25 batches redirected under the decision of Gazprom and Shell – the company’s main shareholders.
In 2011, Sakhalin Energy produced almost 10.7 million tons of LNG, despite the fact that its design capacity was 9.6 million tons per year. The company shipped 163 standard batches of LNG. 69.5% of the total volume was shipped to Japan, while 25.7% to South Korea. China, Taiwan and Thailand respectively received 2.4%, 1.7% and 0.6% of the total volume of LNG.
