Songa Orders Two Cat-D Rigs from DSME (South Korea)

South Korea’s shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co (DSME) has secured a new order for two Cat-D semi-submersible rigs from Norway based Songa Offshore. The contract signing ceremony was held during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) held in Houston, U.S.A on 3rd May.

The value of the contract is approximately $1.1 billion USD and the rigs will be delivered in the middle of 2015. Songa Offshore, an international drilling contractor, now has 4 semi-submersible rigs on order at DSME.

After delivery, these rigs will be chartered by Statoil, the Norwegian state oil company for eight years, and they will provide services to the Norwegian Coast, the North Sea, and Polar Regions.

The development of the Cat D semi-submersible drilling rigs has been initiated by Statoil . The Cat D drilling rig is a new generation drilling and well intervention vessel, purpose made for the needs for Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) operations.

This latest contract puts DSME’s 2012 secured orders worth 5 billion USD at 15 vessels and offshore projects with 66% of the orders coming from offshore projects. DSME, the world’s second largest shipyard, is well proven in the offshore sector. It delivered 40 semi-submersibles and drillships since 1982.
