Lloyd’s Register has made two new senior appointments in Asia which will benefit global shipowners, operators and builders.
Luis Benito has been appointed Strategic Marketing Manager, Lloyd’s Register . Based in Singapore, Benito will strengthen the links between the organisation’s technology development, strategic research and its ship-owning and shipbuilding clients who are looking for support to design and build the ships of the future.
Benito is a 20-year veteran of classification and, until taking up his new role, ran Lloyd’s Register’s operations in Korea, where his leadership helped the organisation to achieve the top position in the annual survey undertaken by the influential Korean Shipbuilders Association in three out of the last four years.
”Our clients needs are growing more complex,” said Benito . “Demand for higher performance, energy management, the introduction of new fuels, engines and designs is driving change. Owners and builders need essential guidance and verification throughout the design development and construction phases — as well as in-service. We are focused on verifying performance and safety criteria to help the industry make good decisions.”
Benito, a Naval Architecture graduate of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (the Technical University of Madrid), has worked in field survey, project management and leadership roles in Spain and Korea.
”Luis has front-line experience. He has great experience in the back-bone of our fleet — the tankers, bulk carriers and containerships that carry the majority of the world’s trade,” said Tom Boardley, Lloyd’s Register’s Marine Director . “He also has a great deal of gas-sector knowledge; Lloyd’s Register classified the lead designs and qualified the new technology for the Q-Flex and Q-Max LNG carriers built in Korea. He is able to play that important role in connecting technical reality with commercial opportunity.”
Soo Young Lee takes over as Chief Representative and Marine Manager for Korea . Lee was one of the first Korean nationals to join Lloyd’s Register when he started in 1980, and he has demonstrated his skills in managing large and complex operations in Korea and China.
“We are lucky to have such an experienced man to take the lead in a vital centre of operations and technology development for both ourselves and the industry,” said Boardley.
