The Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy has issues two request for proposals for cable-related equipment, thus continuing the preparations for the $11-million subsea cable project that will connect tidal turbines in the Bay of Fundy with the power grid.
According to The Chronicle Herald, the tender for the required devices will last until July 6. These devices will monitor and measure movement of the cable end, subsea positioning, noise, vibration and impact.
The first device to be hooked up to the grid, no sooner than spring next year, will be from the French company Alstom and partner Clean Current of Vancouver.
Nova Scotia Power is the only participant to have tested a turbine so far. In 2009 they deployed a $10-million turbine from the Irish company OpenHydro, but the device was soon damaged by the tides.
IT International Telecom of Halifax received the contract to install the 11-kilometre, 16-megawatt cable, which is expected to provide power to 20,000 homes.
