CAT Telecom, Thai telecom company, announced that it has commenced the construction of additional submarine cables in the Gulf of Thailand, Telegeography.com reports.
The total worth of the contract is about THB2.7 billion (USD85 million) and has the aim of adding data bandwidth capacity and connectivity between the southern and central parts of the country.
This project should also meet the international data transmission demands of Thailand and other countries in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
CAT has issued an annual revenue forecast of THB6.5 billion, which is well below the expected revenues of THB7.5 billion. The reasons for this are the delays in launching the “On Net” fibre optic cable in ten provinces and in Bangkok.
The launch of these services is expected in the fourth quarter of this year and during the following year.
CAT is starting another project to deploy about 20,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots in public areas throughout the country by the end of this year.
