PLN, the state-owned electricity company is planning to install underwater cables to distribute electricity from Bali to Nusa Lembongan Island, The Jakarta Post reports.

The Lembongan underwater cable installation would provide an additional 20 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the island. The cables will be installed from Saba Beach in Gianyar to Lembongan Island and Nusa Penida Island.

The total cost of the project is about Rp 140 billion (US$14.84 million).

PLN was supposed to install two underwater cables from Java to Bali, however, these actions were postponed from July to August.

The new cables are expected to deliver up to 210 MW of electricity per day.

It is estimated that electricity demands in Bali increase by 10 percent annually.

Upcoming project that the company plans to execute is the Bali Crossing project, which includes the installation of two cables from Ketapang in East Java to Gilimanuk in Jembrana, Bali.
