Admiralty Shipyards recently started sea trials for the research and expedition vessel RV Akademik Treshnikov. The trials are scheduled to last for 11-day and will be conducted in the Gulf of Finland near the island of Hogland.

The RV Academic Treshnikov is a scientific and expedition vessel built for the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia (Roshydromet). The new flagship of the scientific and survey fleet is to replace the RV Akademik Fyodorov and is intended to support the activities of the Russian Antarctic Expedition: replacement of staff of the Antarctic stations, delivery of cargo onto unequipped shore and the ice, carrying out research in the ocean and the study of natural resources and events; removal of waste and debris from the Antarctic.

According to the Portnews site the commissioning team consisting of different 160 specialists will test the ship’s main engine, steering gear, auxiliary machinery, communications, navigation and anchoring equipment as well as vessel’s speed performance, maneuverability etc. The vessel will undergo a day operation in automatic mode (the ship’s power plant will be operating without the crew in the engine room).

The R/V Akademik Treshnikov delivery is scheduled for August 2012.

Amiralty Shipyards (Admiralteysky Verfy) is the oldest Russian shipbuilder, founded back in 1704. The company is part of Western Center of Shipbuilding owned by United Shipbuilding Corporation.
