An American ocean survey firm, Schmidt Ocean institute, has recently reported that they have discovered the wreck of the SS Terra Nova, a Scottish-made wooden ship, off the coast of Greenland.

The wreck was discovered during testing operations of the company’s echo sound equipment on their flagship boat RV Falkor.

According to DailyRecord.co.uk, the vessel was found 1000ft beneath the sea, and its recovery seems to be highly unlikely.

Brian Kelly, an education officer from the Discovery Point museum in Dundee said: “Because she was made of wood, there were fears she would float and cause problems for other vessels so she was shelled by the US Coastguard.

“So she is very badly damaged and probably wouldn’t be able to take any movement. She is also in very deep water, over 1000ft.“

The SS Terra Nova was damaged by an iceberg on September 13, 1943, and sank off the coast of Greenland.
