The latest Applied Acoustics’ S-Boom sub-bottom profiling system is making quite an impact at the SEG show in Las Vegas. Its novel design, three boomer plates connected in series on a single catamaran, has already proved hugely successful in Northern European waters so it’s now being introduced to US companies as an ideal tool for seabed surveys prior to the installation of offshore wind turbines.

Accurate geological surveys are vital to the integrity and stability of turbines so being able to determine the structure of the seabed down to around 100m is crucial. Consequently, the S-Boom, with its facility to offer both deep penetration and high resolution from its multiple transducers, provides an ideal solution.

“We designed this survey product with three main criteria,” said Sales Manager Gavin Willoughby , “It obviously needed to provide high resolution records with deep seabed penetration, but it also needed to be portable enough to be easily moved between vessels and flexible enough to operate in deep and very shallow waters. The S-Boom scores on all three counts, so I’m not surprised by the interest here in Vegas, both for the burgeoning renewables sector and for the more traditional geohazard surveys”.
