After receiving the Federal Government approval, Grant District Council is now awaiting approvals from the State Government to build the world’s first 1MW wave energy converter off the coast of Port MacDonnell later this year, Border Watch informs.

According to Grant District Mayor Richard Sage, the construction of the wave energy converter is expected to commence earlier this year.

“This project has the potential to instigate the creation of a new industry, an industry which has been identified by Acil Tasman as having the potential to be the second largest renewable energy employer in Australia,” the Oceanlinx said on their website.

Oceanlinx also said that the design of the Greenwave device will have very low impact on the environment and on the fishing activities.

The installation of the MW of wave energy is expected to create six permanent jobs in the region, which would bring South Australian coast at the forefront in ocean energy technology.
