Georgiou Precast has been awarded a contract to provide jacking pipe segments to Thiess for construction of the micro tunnel at the Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project.

The contract, which will see the majority of the work undertaken at Georgiou premises in Malaga near Perth, will support 10 local jobs.

General Manager Mark Wheeler said the award by Thiess’s tunnelling division gives Georgiou the opportunity to work on one of Australia’s largest resource projects and provides a Western Australian business with employment and manufacturing opportunities.

“Our role is to supply more than 400 jacking pipe sections used to form and line the 1.2km micro tunnel at Chevron’s Wheatstone LNG project. The project is designed to protect the supply pipeline as it crosses the shoreline from the gas field and reduce impact to the environment,” said Mr Wheeler.

Mr Wheeler continued: “This project also requires specialised skills and equipment. Georgiou and Thiess have been working closely with the mould suppliers (Schlosser-Pfeiffer) to develop and deliver the moulds in time for production to commence in January 2013.”

Georgiou has recently invested in significant improvement initiatives including proprietary manufacturing process improvement training to ensure that it meets the requirements for this project. The company is also focussed on maintaining its exemplary safety performance and 3 year ‘No Lost Time Injury’ status.

“We share Thiess and Chevron’s commitment to environmental responsibility and our systems and processes reduce risks to people, property and the environment. To have been awarded this project by Thiess, one of Australia’s leading tunnelling contractors, confirms our capability as a local company to manage large scale and complex projects. We are grateful to Thiess for its confidence in our ability to deliver safely, on time and to specification,” said Mr Wheeler.
