Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Co signed a $397 million contract in Beijing to build nine patrol vessels for the marine patrol force, china. org.cn reported on Thursday.
The nine ships are five 3,000-ton vessels and four 5,000-ton vessels, and their design will be based on Haijian 50, a 3,000-ton ship for the China Marine Surveillance fleet, and Haixun 01, a 5,000-ton ship for the China Maritime Safety Administration force.
Haixun 01, built by Wuchang Shipbuilding and launched on on July 28th, is 128.6 meter long and weighs 5,418 tons. The primary task of the vessel is conducting search-and-rescue operations including investigation of maritime disputes and providing aid in case of maritime hazards, oil spillage etc. In addition, the patrol vessel can sail up to of 18,520 km without having to refuel, providing accommodation for up to 200 people in case of sea accidents. The vessel is also outfitted with a helicopter platform.
According to the China Marine Surveillance, about 36 inspection ships will join its patrol fleet from 2011 to 2013.
