Claims that independent Scotland would not be able to achieve its target on energy being produced fully from renewable sources were rejected by the Scottish Government, the Blue & Green Tomorrow news site reports.
A report , made by researchers from Birmingham, Cardiff, Robert Gordon and Queens in Belfast, shows doubts that Scotland alone would be able to subsidise its ambition without the support from the rest of the UK.
The Scottish Government responded to the claims in a statement: “ These claims are mistaken. Scotland has some of the greatest renewable energy sources not just in these islands but across Europe, and the reality is that the rest of the UK not only needs Scotland’s electricity to meet its own renewables targets but also to help keep the lights on south of the border .”
It was added further in the statement:“ Given Scotland’s vast renewable resources, with independence, it will be in the rest of UK’s overwhelming interests to ensure support arrangements are in place to secure Scottish renewable energy .”
