As a part of a plan to build a wind farm in the waters near the Kihnu island, Eesti Energia has ordered a EUR 100,000 marine study, writes Eesti Rahvusringhääling news portal.

Namely, the University of Tartu’s Marine Institute will conduct a study on how wind turbines would affect the Baltic herring.

Henn Ojaveer, researcher at the Marine Institute said: ” The Baltic herring, like all the herring, is very sensitive, and we must study how the vibration from the turbines affects its behavior.”

The construction of the wind farm, which will consist of up to 100 turbines, with a total capacity of 500MW is expected to begin in 2020.
