Fassmer of Germany said it has won a contract to design and build the new dual-fuelled Heligoland ferry for Cassen Eils – the first new building under the German flag equipped with LNG propulsion.

The nearly 80-meter-long ship builds on proven features of Helgoland vessels operated by Cassen Eils GmbH, and will have a speed of 20 knots.

The propulsion system will be based on dual fuel technology with LNG as primary fuel, but with the ability to switch to conventional marine diesel if required.

The ship will be completed by April of 2015 and will represent an investment of about 30 million euros.
