STX Offshore & Shipbuilding has launched the first of two ice class LNG tankers,SCF Melampus, ordered by Russia’s Sovcomflot under a long-term agreement with Shell, Sovcomflot said in a statement.

The first LNG tanker will be delivered in late 2014, the second one – in early 2015, according to the statement.

The LNG tankers (with cargo capacity of about 170,000 cbm) are fitted with the equipment needed for operation in low temperatures that will provide for round-the-year transportation of LNG from all existing terminals to the global market.

As of today, Sovcomflot’s fleet consists of 10 LNG and LPG tankers deployed for Russian and international projects (Sakhalin-2 and Tangguh).
