At last week’s (13 November) 6th Korea-Russia Business Dialogue meeting held in Seoul and attended by President Putin and President Park Guen-hye, the Korean Register (KR) and the Russian Register of Shipping (RS) took the opportunity to sign an agreement on shipbuilding.
The memorandum of understanding brings the two class societies closer together and sets out a range of cooperative activities related to shipbuilding and offshore plant.
The aim is the continued development and promotion of the international shipbuilding industry and the agreement includes:
• Technical cooperation and development of common rules for icebreaker/ice classed vessels
• Technical cooperation for LNG and offshore vessels operating in the Arctic ocean
• Regular joint technical seminars
• Regular summits involving the CEO’s of each society
• Information sharing and exchange of technical personnel
At the signing ceremony in Seoul, Pavel Shikov, Chief Operating Officer of RS , said: “ We are keen to continue to develop Russia’s shipbuilding sector and also to widen our own skill and knowledge base. The signing of this new MoU will allow us to learn from our colleagues in Korea and for us to work together to the advantage of the international shipping industry. ”
KR Chairman & CEO, Dr Chon Young-kee commented: “ I am delighted to sign this agreement which I am confident heralds a long and fruitful relationship between KR and RS. Not only will this assist with the ongoing development of the international shipping industry, but it will also make a further contribution to the knowledge base of both countries through mutual technical information interchange. ”
