Swedish tanker owner Terntank has exercised options for two more LNG-powered product tankers pursuant to the order placed in the fall of 2013, according to Sjöfartstidningen.
The eco-friendly tankers will be on a time charter with NEOT, North European Oil Trade Oy, Finland.
The first vessel is slated for delivery in 1Q 2016, while the fourth one is expected in 1Q 2017.
With the new additions, Terntank Rederei’s fleet will have a total of four LNG powered 15,000 dwt product tankers.
Wärtsilä was chosen to furnish the ships with their low-speed main engines with dual fuel and low-pressure technology, compliant with the emission requirements for IMO Tier III.
“We believe LNG technology will help us to ensure continuous operations in the Baltic Sea region by meeting the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) requirements that will become binding from the 1st January 2015.
Cooperation with Terntank is also a natural continuation for the cooperation we already have with them including the three time chartered vessel at the moment,” said Satu Mattila, Chartering Manager at NEOT.
NEOT has also had specific requirements that Terntank’s ships will comply with.
“We have technical requirements for the vessels, such as very good ice capability and operational efficiency, but these requirements also concern the fact that NEOT is working to reduce the environmental impact of oil products within the distribution chain by utilising new and energy-efficient technology to reduce current emission levels in the Baltic Sea’s emission control area.
In addition to other emissions we are also aiming to comply with IMO’s Tier III limit for NOx,” said Satu Mattila.
