South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has signed US$2.8 billion contracts which will see the company build nine new ice-class LNG carriers.

DSME said the orders are by Canada’s Teekay and China’s CLNG for six vessels, while further three will be built for Japan’s MOL and China Shipping.

These ice class carriers, costing about $300 million each, will transport LNG from the Yamal project in Russia.

“The ice class LNG carriers for the project will have independent ice-breaking capabilities that enable them to sail in icy seas with maximum 2.1m ice thickness. The vessels will be capable of transporting LNG from Yamal LNG plant at Sabetta in Yamal Peninsula, Russia, to main LNG markets in the world. During summer period, the carriers will also be able to independently sail on Northern Sea Route to transport LNG to East Asia ,” MOL said in a statement.
