A maintenance dredging of the Port of Maputo quays is scheduled to begin in a month’s time, using TNPA’s (Transnet National Ports Authority) brand new dredging vessel Italeni.
This campaign will ensure that all quays at the port are returned to their designed depth. The dredging contract was signed on Wednesday, September 3rd, at the Port of Durban, South Africa.
The agreement to use Italeni, a 750 m3 grab hopper dredger, forms part of an MoU signed with TNPA in June last year, with both ports committing to strengthening relationships.
The MoU has resulted in the training of employees at TNPA’s Maritime School of Excellence, the acquisition and refurbishment of Ntwanano tugboat (on its way to Maputo), as well as the new dredger vessel Italeni which will be heading to the Port of Maputo in two weeks’ time to assist with the dredging of the port.
“ The signing of the Italeni contract is evidence that the Port of Maputo and the ports of South Africa are not in competition but are collaborating to realize the regional economic integration as the world is pinning its hope on the African continent for economic growth. These are benefits of a relationship that started a few years ago ,” said Mr. Osório Lucas, Chief Executive Officer for the Maputo Port Development Company.
