After a feasibility study of Indian offshore wind potential, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu have been selected as ideal to feature the first Indian offshore wind farms.
The two planned projects will have a 100MW capacity and will fit right into plans of the country’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to harness 1GW of renewable energy by 2020.
The European Union will help with the technical part of the pilot offshore wind farms, according to Indian media. Nevertheless, several agencies still need to give their approval for the two selected sites.
Authorities and organizations working on this project are also busy drafting an offshore wind policy for the country, which will allow for this and any further offshore wind projects to be developed through a private-public joint ventures.
