Malaysia started to actively eye offshore renewable power, according to the country’s media reports saying that Green Power Solutions, based in Malaysian state of Sabah, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Current2Current International.

The two partners plan to develop a 10MW tidal energy project, however, the first thing on their list is to thoroughly examine the potential of the country’s resources ‒ a process that is currently ongoing and could take a few more years before deciding whether to install ocean energy technology.

Malaysian Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, is cited by the Malaysian media as saying that the proposed tidal energy project could be installed in one of these three areas: in the Straits of Malacca, between Labuan and Kuala Penyu off the coast of Sabah or offshore Banggi Island in Kudat.
