In an effort to stabilize and reduce energy prices, False Pass is looking into harnessing tidal power, writes Alaska Public Media.
A study that kicked off in 2012 found “only the best tidal current we’ve ever measured,” said the lead scientist Bruce Wright.
According to Wright, this would enable the production of enough electricity for five towns the size of False Pass.
If they get the funding needed for the development of their tidal energy project, which would amount to up to USD 7 million, they could finish the project in 4 years.
“And if we get our permits squared away, it may be less than that,” concluded Wright .
