MODEC’s floating wind and current hybrid power generation system ‘SKWID’ has sunk on December 18, 2014, the company stated in their press release.
Savonius Keel & Wind Turbine Darrieus (SKWID) sank during the installation process 1.2 km off the coast of Kabe Island, Karatsu-City, Saga Prefecture.
No spill or environmental contamination in the waters occurred, and no one was injured, according to MODEC.
The salvaging process of the SKWID is expected to commence once weather conditions improve in the area.
SKWID is a floating wind and current hybrid power generation system capable of harvesting the renewable energy from currents and ocean winds, and converting them into power.
SKWID was developed by Mitsui Ocean Development & Engineering Company (MODEC), an offshore technology company specializing in floating oil and gas production systems from Japan.
