Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC) has submitted an application to the Marine Management Organisation and Isle of Wight Council for permission to construct and operate a tidal energy demonstration site, it is stated in PTEC’s press release.
If consent is granted, the electricity generated from tidal currents will supply the Island with clean, renewable energy while at the same time creating hundreds of jobs, the company says. The site is located south of the Isle of Wight, and the construction could start in late 2016.
The total electrical output from the site is expected to be over 50.000 MWh per year.
PTEC’s consenting works, including the environmental impact assessment (EIA), were led by Royal HaskoningDHV.
Mark Francis , Project Manager for PTEC, said: “We have already undertaken a comprehensive programme of engagement with regulators, the local community and other stakeholders, and will continue to work closely with them as the project progresses. We look forward to working with the MMO and Local Planning Authority during the consent determination process, which is due to end in 2015.”
