GDF Suez intends to double its power generation from renewables, with the main focus being on marine renewables, according to Reuters.

The group operates 17.8 GW of renewable energy capacity worldwide, or 15 percent of its total, of which 7.8 GW is in Europe and 10 GW outside the region. By 2025 it wants to have 16 GW of renewable capacity in Europe, Reuters reports.

“Nearly half of the capacity that we are developing is in renewables, which are not marginal but totally central for GDF Suez,” Reuters quotes Isabelle Kocher , Deputy Chief Executive for GDF Suez, as saying.

GDF Suez, together with Alstom , has been chosen by the French Prime Minister to supply equipment for a tidal energy pilot farm at Raz Blanchard, France.

The project will have a capacity of 5.6 MW, and the tidal turbines will be able to supply power to 15,000 people.

The sea-based project is scheduled to begin in 2017 and is expected to operate for a period of 20 years.
