Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said it has signed contracts to build 4 LNG carriers for two Korean companies.
According to the filings to the stock exchange, DSME will build a pair of 174,000 cbm LNG tankers for Hyundai LNG Shipping and Korea Line Corporation, each.
The deal, worth $800 million, is for vessels both companies won in a Kogas tender, issued in 2014, and will be used to transport LNG from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass export facility in the US.
The newbuilds will be the first vessels to feature Korean ME-GI technology and the in-house developed LNG fuel supply system as well as the re-liquefaction unit.
The vessels that will be built in DSME’s Okpo shipyard in Geoje are scheduled to be delivered in a sequence during May 2017, the same period imports from the Sabine Pass LNG facility are scheduled to start.
DSME adds the newbuilds to a tally of 37 new LNG carriers ordered in 2014.
