Landmark Capital said it has signed a shipbuilding contract with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industries, China, for a liquefied natural gas carrier with a 45,000 cubic meter cargo capacity, with an option for one more.
The vessel will be constructed at Xiamen Shipbuilding Industries in China’s southeastern Fujian province and is set to be delivered in 2017, the company said in a statement.
The mid-sized carrier will be the first ever to utilize the LNT A-BOX containment system, licensed and designed by LNG New Technologies. The vessel has been designed for worldwide trade of LNG, but with special consideration to re-loading of cargoes and local and regional trades.
Additionally, the vessel will be designed for potential future adaption to carriage of liquefied ethane.
A successful mock-up testing of the LNT A-BOX technology was conducted in cooperation with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industries in January of last year and was witnessed by DNV, BV, and ABS whom have all granted the technology Approval in Principle.
“The existing mid-size fleet is small and aging, while the average LNG carrier size has climbed to 145,000c bm . Emerging LNG importers and a portion of existing smaller import terminals can no longer receive cargos from an ‘average’-sized carrier. There is a strong demand for a cost-effective mid-sized LNG carrier for coastal and regional distribution, where large-scale LNG infrastructure is not feasible,” said K jetil Sjølie Strand, LNG New Technologies’ Managing Director .
