Wintershall Norge AS has started drilling of exploration well 6406/2-8 in the Imsa prospect, in the Norwegian Sea.

The company received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) Norway to drill the well in December 2014. The well is located in production licence 589 in block 6406/2 and 6406/5. Water depth at the site is approximately 262 metres.

According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directory’s (NPD) records, this is the first well to be drilled in the licence.

The drilling is carried out using Transocean Arctic, a semi-submersible drilling rig owned and operated by Transocean. The rig was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan in 1987, and upgraded in 2004.

Wintershall Norge is the operator with an ownership interest of 40 per cent. The other licensees are RWE Dea Norge AS (30 per cent) and Repsol Exploration Norge AS (30 per cent).
