Minesto applies for 1.5 MW tidal array off Anglesey

Minesto has filed an application to the Isle of Anglesey’s Council for the screening opinion for the development of a 1.5 MW offshore tidal array west off Anglesey island, Wales. This array will be used to demonstrate the viability of the array concept, and Minesto plans to expand the initial array

Minesto has filed an application to the Isle of Anglesey’s Council for the screening opinion for the development of a 1.5 MW offshore tidal array west off Anglesey island, Wales.

This array will be used to demonstrate the viability of the array concept, and Minesto plans to expand the initial array of 3 units, with additional 17, if the project is successful.

The company is also seeking permission to place an export cable to landfall at Penrhos Beach.

“The principal purpose of the 1.5 MW Holyhead Deep Green Project is to demonstrate the first full scale installation of the devices and verify the viability of the array concept. Should the project prove successful Minesto intends to apply for a consent to install a further 17 units which will connect to the export cable installed as part of the 1.5MW Holyhead Deep Project,” Joanna Lester , senior environmental consultant with Minesto agents Xodus Group, was quoted as saying by The Daily Post, North Wales’ daily newspaper.

The completed array will have the capacity of 10 MW, and is expected to power 8.000 households.

Minesto, a Swedish based company, is developing a new concept for tidal power plants called Deep Green . Deep Green produces the electricity when the water current creates a hydrodynamic lift force on the wing which pushes the kite forward.
