The Italian dry bulk and tanker owner and operator d’Amico Group took delivery of the 117,000 dwt dry bulk carrier named Cielo d’Italia at the Sanoyas Shipbuilding Corporation’s shipyard in Mizushima, Japan, on Tuesday, February 3.
Back in 2013, the ship was completely redesigned and equipped with a fully electronic engine system, featuring automatic control for optimizing consumption which is reduced by as much as 20%, according to d’Amico.
The Group says the decision to a build ‘handy-cape’ vessel is motivated by the versatility of this type of vessel, larger than the traditional Post-Panamax vessels though smaller than the Cape vessels. Their versatility in terms of size and loadable capacity allows for multiple uses as regards both the type of goods transported and the routes covered.
The value of the order for Cielo d’Italia and its ‘handy-cape’ sister which will be delivered in the first quarter of 2016 is approximately USD 100 million. For the 2014-2016 period, the Group has invested approximately USD 1.2 billion by ordering 38 new ships, both bulkers and tanker vessels.
The 245 m long and 43 m wide Cielo d’Italia, the largest in the company’s fleet, will be employed by d’Amico Dry on a short period time charter until the delivery of its sister ship.
