UKIP Isle of Wight Parliamentary Candidate Iain McKie has opposed the proposed Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre, whose construction could begin in 2016 if the project is granted the consent.
Ian McKie voiced his concerns speaking before the Hands of Our Coastal Heritage. He questioned the sustainability of the project, as well as the potential economic damage it could have on the local inshore fishing business.
Ian McKie , who has eight years of experience at Director-level in the international climate and renewable energy business and who is now a Parliamentary Candiate for the UK Independence Party, questioned the ‘inexperience of senior decision maker’s greenlighting the centre’ stating:
“The last time I looked, there were no specialists on the Council with experience in the climate and energy business. The company behind the project does not appear to have any experience in either the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or its Joint Implementation (JI).
“These two are the cornerstone of all global renewable energy projects, and are subject to UN approval. I am concerned that without proven experience in either CDM or JI, the Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre may not necessarily have the right skills available.”
An application to construct and operate a tidal energy demonstration site has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council and MMO by Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC), early in January 2015.
The site of the proposed tidal energy site is located off the southern coast of the Isle of Wight, and if consent is granted, the construction could begin in late 2016.
PTEC tidal project has received support from UK’s Prime Minister Dave Cameron , and the consent determination process for the PTEC project should be concluded this year.
