Cyprus’ latest offshore well searching for natural gas has come up dry.
According to the island country’s energy ministry, a consortium between Italy’s Eni and South Korea’s Kogas failed to discover exploitable hydrocarbons during their drilling effort at the Amathusa well.
In a statement issued Thursday, March 26, 2015, the ministry said that the well, located in the Block 9 in the Mediterranean Sea, reached the depth of 5.485 meters. The well was drilled using the Saipem 10000 drillship.
This is the second dry well in Cyprus for the Eni/KOGAS consortium in the last few months. Eni/Kogas drilled the Onasagoras well in the same block in the last quarter of 2014, an effort which came up dry too.
“Even though this is disappointing, it does not mean there are no hydrocarbons in Cyprus’s economic exploitation zone,” Reuters quoted energy minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, as saying.
