This aerial image brings you up to speed of dredging works at the Suez Canal currently undergoing expansion. According to the head of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish, there are 34 dredgers currently on the project.
At the moment, the project, which started on September 1st, 2014, succeeded in lifting 113.5 million cubic meters of wet sand by 47.19% of the target of 250 million cubic meters.
The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, which connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
It was opened in November 1869 after 10 years of construction and allows ships to travel between Europe and South Asia without navigating around Africa thereby reducing the sea voyage distance between Europe and India by about 7,000 kilometres.
