Pemex has informed that after a fire that occurred on the Abkatun Alpha platform, in the Bay of Campeche in Mexico last week, the company restarted production in the Abkatun central processing platform.
On April 1, 2015, the incident on Abkatun Alpha platform spurred evacuation of 301 workers and caused the deaths of four. On April 2, the fire was extinguished and according to the company there was no oil spill into the sea.
Pemex identified four workers killed in the Abkatun Alpha platform fire outbreak; however, three workers are still missing, two employed by Cotemar and one by Pemex.
According to Pemex, it is possible for the platform to reach this week 80% of the production it had before the incident since the platform is structurally under conditions to restore its operations.
At the press conference held yesterday (April 5) in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, Gustavo Hernandez Garcia , Director General of PEMEX Exploration & Production (PEP) said that internal protocols on the platform allowed timely and rapid evacuation of 301 workers with the support of 10 ships and 28 helicopters, “avoiding a tragedy of major proportions”.
He also said that the search is continuing for the three missing workers. The investigation to determine the cause of the fire is underway.
