Japan’s ten independent regional electric power companies boosted their LNG use by 0.9 percent in the fiscal year ended March 31, as compared to the same period a year before.
The companies consumed 56.6 million mt of the chilled gas in FY2014, according to the data from the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPC).
The 10 utilities bought 59 million mt of LNG for the mentioned period, a rise of 0.6 percent from a year earlier.
Total energy generated and purchased by the 10 companies in FY2014 declined by 3.1 percent from a year earlier to 893.83 billion kWh.
This was mainly due to decreased cooling demands caused by relatively lower temperatures from July to September, and decreased heating demands caused by relatively higher temperatures from January to March as compared to last year, FEPC said.
According to FEPC, all nuclear power plants in Japan remained shut down in FY2014 resulting in no electricity production at all, for the first time since 1966.
