Energy-hungry Pakistan is set to receive its sixth shipment of LNG since it has started importing the chilled gas in March this year.
The 150,900 cbm FSRU Exquisite, which is being used as Pakistan’s first LNG import terminal, is expected to arrive at the Port Qasim facilities on Wednesday.
The vessel is carrying a cargo from Qatar, the world’s largest producer of liquefied natural gas.
Pakistan, which is experiencing a huge shortage of natural gas, is mainly using the fuel to fire up the country’s power plants as well as to reduce its reliance on importing furnace oil and diesel.
The country has been hit by a devastating heatwave that began two weeks ago taking lives of over 1,200 people.
The end of June saw some of the harshest weather conditions hit Pakistan with temperatures reaching 45 C, according to Government of Pakistan’s Meteorological Department.
In order to fill the supply gap, Pakistan State Oil Company has earlier this year issued a tender for four cargoes of liquefied natural gas for delivery from July through October.
Commodity trader Gunvor has been awarded three LNG cargoes for the August-October period, while Trafigura will supply Pakistan with one cargo in July, Sheikh Imran-ul-Haque, Chief Executive Officer of Engro Elengy told LNG World News on Tuesday.
Engro Elengy is operating the country’s first import terminal with a capacity for regasification of up to 4.5 million tons of LNG per year.
