Along with some other researchers from the DTU Wind Energy Department, MEDOW’s researches visited the Middelgrunden offshore wind farm.

The trip was led by Hans Christian Sørensen of SPOK Consultancy, who oversaw the planning and commissioning of the wind farm.

MEDOW ESR Gen Li said: “After around 20 minutes on the boat, we arrived at the very left wind turbine of the wind farm. The capacity of the turbine is 2 MW. The height of the hub is 64 meter. The rotor diameter is 76 meter. The total height is 102 meter! All of us climbed to the top of the turbine. We looked around inside the narrow hub, the generator and the turbine.

“Inside the nacelle, we were able to see all the workings of the turbine; the generator was still warm when we touched it! Outside the window, we could look at the panorama of the whole OWF. It was a magnificent sight on the top of an offshore wind turbine! It was very cool to have an experience on the top of an offshore wind turbine.”

The Middelgrunden offshore wind farm consists of 20 fixed-speed turbines with a combined capacity of 40MW and is situated 3.5 km outside Copenhagen harbour.
