The pre-startup of the oil layer platform of the giant offshore South Pars gas field is more than 98% complete, Iranian petroenergy information network Shana has reported.

According to Shana , Ali-Reza Zeighami, South Pars oil layers project manager, said the platform – expected to become fully operational in 2016 – is being developed for processing 35,000 b/d of crude oil.

The news agency has also said that the platform is expected to be delivered to the contractor, Petroiran Development Company, in two weeks. Shana noted that the construction of the platform, weighing 890 tons, was supposed to start in 2006, but it did not happen due to insufficient resources, majorly influenced by the sanctions posed on Iran.

The outsourcer in South Pars gas field project is National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).

South Pars gas field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, of which 3,700 square kilometers are in Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.

The field is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.

After the recent deal Iran had made with P5+1 countries, Douglas Westwood, an energy intelligence group, said that appetite to invest in Iran will be strong amongst major operators.
