The ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) could contribute to the 2,080 MW share of all renewable energy in Malaysia in the next five years.

According to Bernama, Malaysian national news agency, Nadzri Yahaya, Deputy Secretary General for Energy, said OTEC will contribute less than 1% to the total renewables electricity generation share, together with biomass, mini-hydro, solid waste, biogas, and solar photovoltaic.

“The OTEC projection by 2020 was based on the anticipated 10 MW public-funded OTEC project of Pulau Layang-Layang in Sabah and another possible 10 MW private-funded OTEC project to supply power to the deepwater oil and gas production in Sabah and Sarawak,” Nadzri Yahaya was quoted as saying by Bernama .

OTEC is a process that produces electricity by using the temperature difference between deep ocean water and warm tropical surface waters.
