Odisha-based social outfit Jana Jagaran Manch (JJM) has called the state government to acquire skills and technology for tidal energy utilization in order to meet the energy needs of this Indian state.
Odisha, one of India’s 29 states, located in the east of India, has potential to generate power from tidal currents, but the state government has shown little interest in developing this renewable energy source, according to India’s daily The New Indian Express.
With Odisha’s 430 km of coastline, and topography suitable for using tidal currents to produce electricity, JJM has called for the state government to act swiftly in developing this resource instead of thermal power, and other forms of renewable sources that haven’t been successful due to cost and available resources, The New Indian Express reports.
“Why cannot the Government or Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) implement modern technologies to minimise the transmission and distribution losses and check theft of power so that the pressure on consumers is reduced,” JJM member Pradeep Patnaik was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.
