Wärtsilä on Monday said it has been contracted to supply dual-fuel engines for 15 inland waterway barges to be chartered by Shell Trading Rotterdam.
The vessels, currently being built for Plouvier Transport by VEKA Shipyard will mainly operate on liquefied natural gas, Wärtsilä said in its statement.
Under the agreement signed in December, the Finnish engine manufacturer will supply a 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel main engine, a gearbox, an LNGPac fuel gas handling system and a Wärtsilä propeller with an HR nozzle for each of the 15 barges.
According to Wärtsilä, delivery of the equipment will start in June 2016.
Shell plans on using the 110 metre long barges to transport mineral oil products in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp region.
The vessels are expected to be delivered in phases starting in late 2016 through to mid-2018.
