Open Ocean’s current analysis system Metocean Analytics has included high resolution current data of Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy to its catalogue.
For the Bay of Fundy, Open Ocean worked directly with Richard Karsten and Thomas Roc from Acadia Tidal Energy Institute who are renowned experts of the ocean dynamics of that region, Open Ocean informed.
The collaboration led to the production of a high resolution ocean current simulation with a strong focus on the Minas Passage, Grand Passage and Petit Passage, the locations that have some of the highest tidal energy potential in the world.
This new dataset was included in Metocean Analytics’ catalogue only after a thorough quality control with comparisons to in-situ measurements.

Bay of Fundy’s tides push over 160 billion tonnes of water twice a day, which can produce up to 60,000 MW of clean energy. Metocean Analytics’ high resolution current data for the Bay of Fundy will concretely help the marine renewable energy developers at exploration, installation, operational and decommissioning phases of wave and tidal projects in the region.”
According to Open Ocean, Metocean Analytics simplifies and accelerates the search and analysis process for potential sites thanks to a large catalogue of currents, waves and wind data, coupled with statistical tools analyzing precisely the locations of interest, and an editing tool providing reports on-demand.
