The UK’s trade body for wind, wave and tidal energy, Renewable UK, has issued a response to the announced review of the feasibility and practicality of tidal lagoon energy in the UK.
The UK government has commissioned a review of the technology to improve the understanding of how tidal lagoons could contribute to the future of the UK’s energy mix in the most cost effective way.
Responding to this announcement, Maf Smith, RenewableUK’s Deputy Chief Executive, said that the decision on the Swansea Bay tidal lagoon project needs to forthcoming, and that further delays could jeopardise the opportunity for UK to become a leader in tidal lagoon technology.
“We are confident that this review will show the huge potential tidal lagoons have to the UK, boosting the economy and providing clean energy for generations to come. Each new project that’s built will offer even better value for money due to economies of scale.
“Swansea Bay is a large and innovative infrastructure project and Britain has a unique opportunity to take the world lead in this technology. It’s important to note though that a decision on the Swansea Bay project needs to be forthcoming, and that further delays could jeopardise these opportunities,” said Maf Smith .
