French utility and LNG player Engie has been granted concession by the Antwerp Port Authority to build and operate the LNG bunkering station for barges.
According to a statement by the port authority, Engie will use a site at quay 526-528 to build the bunkering station.
The concession has been granted for a period of 30 years, starting on October 1.
The construction of the bunkering facility will make LNG “permanently available in the port of Antwerp,” the port authority said.
Truck-to-ship bunkering has been available at the Belgian port since 2012, however, first seagoing vessel, the Sefarina , bunkered at the Port of Antwerp on September 2015.
It is expected that the LNG bunkering facility will become operational in 2017.
