DONG Energy has awarded a contract to Heerema Marine Contractors for the transport and installation of an offshore substation for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm.

The work will comprise the transport and installation of the substation’s jacket, piles and topside at the German offshore wind farm.

In late January, Heerema Marine Contractors was hired to transport and install the BorWin3 jacket in the North Sea.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 has an awarded grid capacity of 450MW and is located approximately 57km off the north-west coast of Germany, next to the 312MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm.

In August 2015, DONG Energy signed an agreement with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind for the delivery of the V164-8.0MW wind turbines for Borkum Riffgrund 2.

The offshore wind farm will be able to cover the consumption of 460,000 German households.
